About Santa Carvings

All santas are carved from basswood using knifes and chisels. I do not use any sandpaper leaving the carvings with a whittled antiqued look. The carvings are painted with acrylic paint, antiqued using a variety of gels and finished off with a wax giving a soft finish to the overall carvings. When the carving is finished there are different highlights(shading)and in some cases paint may be slightly rubbed off giving a Old World Look.

Wood Spirits

When walking in the forest the Wood Spirit will show himself, often appearing in trees, on branches, and other forms of wood. He will show himself to the innocent and the pure at heart (for example, children). The Wood Spirit was cast into a tree by an evil sorceress and, as carvers, we are releasing his spirit.

The wood is carved green and, as the wood dries and splits, the wood spirit will release his spirit into your household. Good luck, health and fortune will follow.

Early Europeans believed Wood Spirits protected the forest and that as long as there was a Wood Spirit, the forest would stand. Another belief by the woodcutters and hunters was that when someone disappeared or did not return home from the forest, he was taken by the wood spirit. The woodcutters prior to entering the forest would knock on a tree, from this practice, one of our most common expressions to ward off evil was derived
